The latest Subnautica 2 update is Buddy System Hotfix 2, released on October 6, 2026. The next major update is Early Access 2 (EA2), which Unknown Worlds calls its most substantial update since release: a new region with several biomes, new creatures and more story. As of October 17, 2026, there is no announced release date. A July post placed EA2 "later in the year", and the October 15 dev vlog gave no date.

This page reflects the live game after Buddy System Hotfix 2 and official posts up to October 17, 2026. Subnautica 2 is in Early Access, so features, balance and plans can change, and Unknown Worlds labels its roadmap as subject to change.

Latest patch: Buddy System Hotfix 2

Hotfix 2 went live on October 6, 2026 (version 131439 on the official wiki). Unknown Worlds highlighted fixes for voice chat detection, the Tadpole being teleported incorrectly and the Scanner Station's resource accuracy. The changes most players will notice:

  • Voice chat now treats local and remote players the same way, improving voice activity detection.
  • Tadpoles, including destroyed ones with chassis modules attached, now return from out-of-bounds areas correctly.
  • Thermal and Hydroelectric generators keep the right power output after being streamed out and back into the world.
  • The Shiver Leviathan ignores unpiloted vehicles, and Leviathan grab attacks on the Tadpole were improved.
  • Players no longer see the multiplayer host as dead after dying themselves.
  • VSync now switches off when DLSS Dynamic Frame Generation is selected, and an audio-related Xbox memory leak is fixed.

If you play with mods, disable or remove them before launching after a hotfix: Unknown Worlds says community mods are not updated for the latest hotfix and may cause crashes until their creators update them. Hotfixes can also take a while to roll out worldwide.

Early Access 1.1: Adaptive Measures

Adaptive Measures (July 8, 2026) was the quality-of-life update promised on the roadmap. Its patch notes open with Biomod changes: two more Biolabs (in Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins), six Biomods from Biolabs instead of four, and extra passive Biomod slots unlocked by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner. Biomods are optional upgrades, while the Adaptations you need to progress are a separate system covered in our Adaptations guide.

It also added the long-requested FOV slider, sprinting out of the water (on the surface or in your base) and new creature reactions: most creatures flee after a Survival Multitool hit and turn briefly dizzy after a Sonic Resonator hit. Audiologs stopped auto-playing and can be replayed from the PDA, and a new storage buildable keeps its contents out of nearby crafting. Hotfix 4 followed on July 14 to fix Angel Combs that would not open, water currents inside bases and the FOV slider missing on Xbox.

Early Access 1.2: Buddy System

Buddy System (August 19, 2026) was the co-op update. It added cross-platform proximity voice chat that gets harder to hear as players move apart, with always on, push to talk and always off modes. Downed players can now be revived before they reprint, keeping their equipment and regaining a little oxygen, or they can choose to reprint at their Biobed right away.

It also added five emotes on a radial menu, direct item trading, the Jegna and Grace character options with two new color schemes, and the Tracking Tag, a short-range beacon that extends your black box range if you carry it when you reprint. Hotfix 1 on September 1 fixed translations, improved Collector Leviathan pathing in the lower canyon and made save files record their build number and branch, so incompatible saves cannot load into older builds. For how co-op and crossplay work today, see the multiplayer and crossplay guide.

The official Subnautica 2 roadmap

Unknown Worlds posted its Early Access roadmap on May 15, 2026, and apart from the May 14 launch it gives no dates. The Subnautica 2 road map graphic in that post lists three stages:

  1. EA 1.1, a quality-of-life update: improvements to Biomods, Blight encounters, wrecks, vehicle docking and fabrication, the PDA databank and voice-log priority, plus more passive Biomod slots, a storage cache and sprint. This arrived as Adaptive Measures.
  2. EA 1.2, a co-op update: better HUD signals, base builder tool and pinned recipes, plus voice chat, emotes, trading, revives and more customization. This arrived as Buddy System.
  3. Future major expansion updates: a new region that expands the world, with new biomes, creatures, resources, tools, a new vehicle and the next chapter of the story.

The roadmap also promises ongoing bug fixes, balance tuning and optimization, and states that buying once during Early Access covers all future updates and content at no extra cost; 1.1 and 1.2 both arrived as free, automatic downloads. In the developers' Early Access section on the Steam store, Unknown Worlds estimates that Early Access will take about two to three years, based on its previous Early Access games, and says the price will increase afterward. Our Early Access guide covers what that means for buying now.

When is the next Subnautica 2 update?

The next big Subnautica 2 content update is Early Access 2, and it has no announced release date as of October 17, 2026. The clearest timing hint is older: the July 7 post for the Adaptive Measures vlog said it outlined content coming "later in the year for Early Access 2." Neither the October 15 post nor the narration of that vlog gives a date or a release window.

In the October 15 vlog, Creative Director Anthony Gallegos lists these EA2 features:

  • A complete new playable region with several new biomes, which he calls one of the scariest regions the team has made.
  • New creatures, plus new behavior for the Collector Leviathan.
  • New story elements about the colonists and "the other beings."
  • The Frog Chassis, a new buildable Tadpole chassis with arms and legs.
  • Dash moving from a Biomod to the Fins, plus a couple of new Biomods.
  • New building options, including a round room for bases.

An earlier vlog from June 4 described the new region as the home of the Collector Leviathan and said the goal is to let you continue your current save instead of starting a new one; treat that as a stated goal rather than a promise. The October video opens a series featuring level designers, artists and other team members, so more details should follow.

Two signals are worth watching: Unknown Worlds posted an Update Vlog one day before both 1.1 and 1.2, and it says Experimental builds go up shortly before releases reach everyone.

07

How to join the Experimental branch

The Experimental branch, launched on August 12, 2026, is an opt-in preview of upcoming builds on Steam and Xbox. Unknown Worlds warns that these builds are more likely to contain bugs, including game-breaking ones, and suggests you do not get attached to saves made there. Saves do not transfer between Experimental and the main branch, but they are stored separately, so your main saves should reappear when you switch back.

On Steam:

  1. Right-click Subnautica 2 in your Steam Library.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Game Versions and Betas tab.
  4. Choose the Experimental branch in the Beta Participation drop-down.
  5. Close the window, and Steam starts the download automatically.

On Xbox, join the Xbox Insider Program; you must be 18 or older and either own Subnautica 2 or have an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Install the free Xbox Insider Hub app on your console or PC, sign in, open Previews, select Subnautica 2 Experimental (Public Test) and choose Join, then follow the install prompt. You may need to restart your console to trigger the update.

For now, the branch does not update daily the way it did for Subnautica and Below Zero. The official wiki adds that co-op works only if every player is on Experimental, that mods may not work there, and that, as of October 17, 2026, the Experimental build matches the live build (version 131439).
